Your guide to Australia.
You apply for the Student visa (subclass 500) with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from a CRICOS-registered provider.
What you need
A CoE, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), English test results, proof of funds and a statement that meets the Genuine Student requirement.
Working while you study
You can work up to 48 hours per fortnight during study periods and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
After you graduate
The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) usually runs 2 years after a bachelor's or coursework master's, and 3 years after a research master's or PhD.
Genuine Student requirement
Your application must show why this course and this provider make sense for you. Write it clearly and honestly, in your own words.
Home Affairs sets a 12-month living-cost figure you must show, on top of tuition and travel.
City choice
Sydney and Melbourne cost the most. Adelaide, Perth and regional campuses are usually more affordable.
Health cover
OSHC is compulsory for the whole visa. Compare providers so you pay only for the cover you need.
Earning while studying
Australia's minimum wage is among the highest in the world, which helps with day-to-day costs.
February is the main intake and July the second. Some universities also start in November.
Timeline
Start 6 to 9 months ahead to leave time for offers, CoE, OSHC and the visa decision.

Foundation and diploma pathways lead into the second year of many degrees if you need a different route in.
Credit transfer
Previous study can sometimes shorten your degree. Ask your university whether a credit assessment applies to you.
